Working Together toward Early Childhood Literacy

By Lena Scaff, Executive Director of Early Learning Centers

Early Learning Centers (ELC) and Literacy Lubbock are working together to bring the Tiny Tots Read A Lot program to each of our childcare centers.

Helen is one of the Literacy Lubbock volunteers for the Tiny Tots program who is helping to make this partnership possible. Each week, she visits the Guadalupe ELC to read to the children. The stories she reads spark the children's imaginations through her creative storytelling and develop in the children a deep love of reading. ELC teachers then build on the story by coordinating the curriculum and leading activities that relate back to the books Literacy Lubbock volunteers read.

In addition, each child receives a free copy of the book to build their personal libraries at home. The children are so excited to have these books that when their parents arrive, they run to get their books and tell them about the story.

We're very excited about this new collaboration because we know the impact that literacy has on a child's future. We're committed to instilling a love of reading in each of our children and making sure they have the building blocks they need to be successful in school and successful in life.
