Why Program Review Matters and How You Can Help

By Jon Mark Bernal, 2020 Program Review Chair

I first heard of Program Review when I asked a board member several years ago about getting involved with United Way. That ask encouraged me to volunteer on my first review team, and this year I’m fortunate to be chairing the program. Now, I understand why this process is so important to the mission of our United Way.

Lubbock, Texas is a pretty special place and the people here are some of the most giving and service-minded individuals you will ever meet. I am proud to say that we as a community give back by providing thousands of service hours each year through various local volunteer organizations. In addition, Lubbock and the surrounding communities go above and beyond by committing millions of dollars to our Community Partners.

When you serve on a Program Review team, you will learn more about how those donor dollars impact each agency. We tour the agencies, visit with the staff, and review documents submitted for each one, ensuring that all volunteers have a full understanding of how and why each Community Partner receives financial support through United Way. As a volunteer, you can feel assured that your time is well spent by offering recommendations on how to improve and enhance programs reviewed during your time on a team.

The mission of United Way is Giving · People · Hope. By serving on a Program Review team you will know that you have played an integral part in doing just that.

If you, your friends, or co-workers are looking for a great way to give back, consider joining Program Review. For more information about getting involved, please contact Devin McCain, Lubbock Area United Way Community Impact Director.
