Volunteers read to second graders throughout Lubbock County

Reading is key to a child's success in school. It sets them up for big opportunities later in life.

The Lubbock Area United Way fostered thousands of students' education Thursday, with its second "United We Read" event.

"The number one thing that we, as teachers and even parents can do to promote literacy with our children is to read aloud to them daily," Lubbock-Cooper Deputy Superintendent Macy Satterwhite said. "Kids really need to hear 1,000 stories before they can actually take on the full task of reading themselves. And so, the more we can read aloud to them, the better it is."

Students read "Thelma The Unicorn" with their teachers, superintendents, police officers and many other volunteers. This was in every second grade classroom in nine public school districts in Lubbock County.

They also did crafts related to the book's theme. And they got a copy of the book to take home.

We'll hear more from volunteers who made this happen on FOX34 News at Nine Sunday.
