United Way More Than Halfway Toward $6 Million Goal

October 19, 2017 | Press Release

More than 700 volunteers, donors, and agency representatives met today at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center for Lubbock Area United Way’s Mid-Campaign Report Luncheon. Campaign Chair Jon Stephens with SouthWest Bank announced that $3,938,897 has been contributed to the campaign so far, which is 64.7% of the $6,091,976 goal.

“With your help supporting, volunteering, giving, and promoting Lubbock Area United Way, we are able to continue doing the work we do in our community each year,” said Stephens.

Stephens was presented with checks from two golf tournaments whose proceeds benefit Lubbock Area United Way. Robert Taylor, CEO of United Supermarkets, presented a check for $99,234 from the 26th Annual Jacky Pierce Charity Golf Classic.  United Way LIVE UNITED Golf Tournament Chair Amber Dean, with City Bank, presented a check for $122,450.  Vice Chairs for the various campaign divisions also made reports on the totals contributed to date.

Fifty-six local businesses were recognized as Campaign Event Sponsors for underwriting the costs for the Mid-Campaign Report Meeting, the Victory Report Meeting, and numerous other campaign events.

Women United, a new Leadership donor engagement opportunity, was announced and is being co-chaired by Amber Dean and Dr. Michelle McCord, Superintendent of Frenship ISD. Women United is composed of women leaders in the community who give to Lubbock Area United Way at the Leadership level.

Women United has selected the prevention of child abuse and neglect as their primary focus area. They have advocated for child abuse prevention funding at the state and local levels and have create a mentor program, matching members with single mothers working to complete their college education.

“Women United mentors can offer a listening ear, an encouraging word, and a "hand up" to single moms working for a better life for themselves and their children,” said Dr. McCord.
