The United Family announced a new store and a major donation to United Ways across the region Tuesday.

$500,000 will be donated to the agencies, with nearly $120,000 going to the Lubbock Area United Way.

"With everything that's going on this year, there's been a lot of charitable events that haven't taken place," said Glenn Cochran, president and CEO of the Lubbock Area United Way. "We would've understood if we couldn't have raised any money from the Jacky Pierce Golf Tournament.

"But the folks at United Supermarkets were not going to let that happen."

Amenities of the new store will include: Fresh, in-house Evie Mae's Barbecue; a Tap House with craft beef and wine; a station for Asian Bowls and Sushi Bar; Texas Take-out; Starbuck's; Streetside grocery pickup, delivery; as well as full-service bakery, floral department, meat counter and more.

The store will also be designed with limiting COVID-19 spread in mind.

"You'll see wider aisles, you'll see more room at checkouts," said Robert Taylor, CEO of The United Family. "You'll see less things that are touched by the guests. And we're implementing as many of those things to safely serve our guests as we can."

This new location will add about 250 new jobs to the 4,200 people already employed by the United Family in Lubbock.
