The Lubbock Area United Way reached around 3,600 second-graders Thursday, through its third annual United We Read event.

Volunteers read and helped with activities in classrooms and virtual classrooms across Lubbock County.

Every student received a copy of the book "Word Collection" and a craft the accompanies the story.

"I like the word "collection" today, because in the end, after looking over and hearing all those different words, it encourages kids to find their own words to show who they are," Councilwoman Shelia Patterson Harris said. "And use those words in making those words better."
