Lubbock Area United Way this week announced it is seeking volunteers to participate in its United We Read event Sept. 20.
Volunteers from the City of Lubbock, Lubbock County, and local businesses will be in 170 Lubbock Independent School District, Frenship ISD, Lubbock-Cooper ISD and Shallowater ISD 2nd grade classrooms. More than 3,400 students will participate in the event.
Lubbock Area United Way Community Impact Director Ashley Ammons said this would be the non-profit organization’s first time coordinating the effort.
“United Way is renewing its commitment to education and ensuring that all children are grade-level readers by 3rd grade,” she said. “Our hope is that these 3,400 children learn one simple lesson: They matter and their education matters.”
Every child will go home with a copy of the book and a craft to go along with the story.
Individuals and businesses interested in volunteering may contact the United Way office at (806) 747-2711 or through email at reading@liveunitedlubbock.org.
