The Lubbock Area United Way touches about 120,000 lives in our area each year. The work is carried out by many volunteers and in coordination with 23 Partner Agencies.

The agency highlighted priority areas at its annual meeting. These include making sure kids are school-ready for kindergarten and are grade-level readers by third grade, eliminating child abuse and sex-trafficking here and providing access to everyone in need of mental health services.

Carla and Brad Moran received the Rita Harmon Volunteer Service Award for their decades-long dedication.

"Brad and Carla are definitely examples to everyone that lives here on what it means to give back to your community," Board Chair Crystal Edwards said.

Brad is FOX34 General Manager. He told the audience he and Carla are "both uncomfortable accepting awards for just doing what we're supposed to do -- supporting our community."

Margie Smith with the Lubbock Central Appraisal District was presented the award for Campaign Volunteer of the Year, and Mike Moss with Parkhill Smith & Cooper received the award for Agency Volunteer of the Year.

Outgoing United Way directors and officers were also recognized.
