CASA volunteers are appointed by a judge to advocate, or speak for a child or children in foster care. The volunteers are trained to investigate, monitor, report and advocate for the best interests of children in the court system primarily as a result of abuse and neglect. As independent voices in court, they help secure a permanent placement for the child in a safe and caring environment, and often are the only constant adult in these children’s lives during their time in foster care.

Responsibilities of CASA volunteers:

  • work alongside attorneys and social workers as appointed officers of the court

  • take time to find out as much as possible about the child

  • review records, interview parents, talk to teachers

  • most important, get to know the child
