Public Policy

United Way's public policy advocacy plays a vital role in the community by serving as a link between non-profit organizations and government. United Way seeks to communicate, inform and educate elected and appointed government officials at the local, state and federal levels about issues related to our mission and the community.

To keep up with what is going on in the Texas Legislature you can follow United Ways of Texas on Facebook. Lubbock Area United focuses its advocacy in the areas of Education including early childhood, graduation rates and adult literacy.  Other focus areas include health and income.

Legislative Highlights:

  • September 2015 - held Legislative Forum with all candidates for office

  • Participated in regular Legislative conference calls with United Ways of Texas

  • Ongoing assessment with Partner Agencies on legislation

  • Participated in United Ways of Texas Legislative Briefing and Planning

Lubbock Area United Way looks forward to working with all of the West Texas elected officials  on issues that affect our region.  We are particularly interested in working together in the areas of Pre K education, child abuse and neglect, dropout prevention programs, mental health services, and child and adult health programs.

These issues are acute in the West Texas area and all communities must work together to find workable solutions for our most vulnerable citizens. For more information contact Carolyn Simpson at 806.747.2711 or csimpson@unitedway-lubbock.org.
