Planned Giving

United Way is grateful for more than 24,000 donors who give to the annual campaign each year.  There is another very special group of donors who have shown their loyalty through giving to the Lubbock Area United Way endowment.  This creates a permanent gift that will grow with United Way and provide for community needs in the Lubbock area forever.

United Way has proven itself to be a leader in the Lubbock Area since it was founded in 1946.   As one of the leaders of social change and community responsibility, United Way brings the community together to respond to today’s needs and create system wide changes that prevent problems in the future.  

Legal experts recommend that everyone review their estate plans at least every five years.  Some sources say that over 1/3 of adults in the United States do not have a will or any estate plans at all.  Take a moment to review your estate plans and consider making a gift to United Way that will forever sustain your commitment.

Million Dollar Match

A very special giving opportunity has been created in partnership with The CH Foundation.   The United Way and The CH Foundation have a long history of working together on projects to benefit the community.

Thanks to a grant of $1,000,000, donors now have the opportunity to have their gift to the United Way endowment matched dollar for dollar.  Many creative giving options exist that will allow donors to leverage a much larger permanent gift.

In order to qualify for the match, gifts must be irrevocable and paid within five years.  Cash, securities, stocks, personal property or real estate that can be sold is also eligible for the matching program. 

The purchase of a life insurance policy is a very attractive option for some donors.  United Way must be the owner and beneficiary of the policy.  A 50 year old donor can purchase a life insurance policy with a death benefit of $50,000 for about $11,000.   Thanks to the match, the premium payments will be doubled, thus allowing a donor to give a $100,000 gift for an out of pocket cost of $11,000.

Red Feather Society

From the 1930’s through the 1950’s the red feather was used as a symbol of the United Way across the country.   Many people are familiar with a painting by Grandma Moses that represents children around a flag pole that supports a red feather flag.  This traditional symbol was selected by the Lubbock Area United Way as a way to honor those donors who have made a significant planned gift of at least $20,000 to the Endowment.   The names of over sixty generous donors are listed on permanent display in the Lubbock Area United Way office and are published in the Leadership Giving Registry.
